All Human, All Equals

All Human, All Equals

Is this year's slogan for Human Rights Day.

Every year, on the tenth of December, the world observes Human Rights Day in remembrance of the day the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. This milestone document proclaims the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being.

I know what you must be telling yourself right now, we are in the twenty-first century, human rights and equality aren’t really a problem anymore, right?

Well, you would be surprised to learn that inequality and discrimination are still problems all over the world.

This makes human rights lawyers and lawyers in general, a fundamental pillar of humanity.

Why pursue a degree in Human Rights Law?

Okay, sure being a defender of human rights sounds nice and everything but we can’t live off good karma, we need to put food on our tables too.

Make no mistakes, human rights lawyers are very well paid, for they make a hefty 120k per year (and that's just the median salary). At their best, human rights lawyers can make more than 600k per year. That's not too bad, right?

Keep in mind, the standards of equality and inclusivity are getting higher and higher, companies are in constant need of human rights lawyers and advisors to keep up with those standards, a lawsuit for discrimination or segregation are the last thing they want.

Like Marko Milanovic, professor of public international law said “an LL.M. in Human Rights Law is a passport to rewarding and varied careers in which the only limit to opportunity is your imagination,”.

You can work in business, helping companies to act in a responsible way. But you can also work for human rights NGOs, in government, for international organizations and human rights courts, or for law firms specializing in human rights litigation.

Sold, now what do I need to do?
