From Suitcase to Scholarship: A Student’s UK Journey

She laughs when she says it, but it’s true: these days, her suitcase has replaced her car for grocery shopping. Life as an international student in the UK comes with its quirks, its challenges, and its unforgettable moments.

Studying abroad was never a sudden decision for her. It was a dream carefully nurtured over the years, encouraged by her parents and especially her father, who planted the idea early on and supported her every step of the way. That dream eventually led her to Aston University.

I was looking for independence, a real challenge, and a taste of the world,” she explains. Aston checked every box. Practical, career-oriented courses, a welcoming campus, and the vibrant city of Birmingham made it feel like the right place to grow, academically and personally.

Of course, studying in the UK doesn’t come cheap. When asked how she managed the financial side, her answer is clear: hard work. The Sir Adrian Scholarship wasn’t just a lucky break; it was the result of dedication and perseverance. Beyond easing the financial burden, the scholarship gave her something equally valuable: confidence. “It showed me that someone truly believed in my potential,” she says.

Leaving home for the first time, however, was one of the hardest parts of the journey. Saying goodbye to family felt like leaving a piece of herself behind. And while life in the UK lived up to her expectations, adjusting wasn’t always easy. Homesickness hit hard, the weather lived up to its reputation, and finding the balance between studies and personal life took time.

One moment, in particular, stayed with her: opening a package sent by her mother. “That’s when I realized just how much I missed home,” she admits.

Yet, despite the challenges, she wouldn’t change a thing.

Every friendship, every experience, every new challenge shaped me in ways I never imagined,” she reflects. She has grown, laughed, cried, and learned far more than she believes she could have at home. And if given the chance to start over?

She wouldn’t hesitate. She would do it all again, in a heartbeat.
